Flea Treatment for Cats: Products, Precautions and Next Steps

Product information checked November 2, 2026. Specific age, weight and interval examples below refer to US labels unless another country is named; follow the exact local pack.

Cat flea treatment includes topical medicines, oral products and other formulations, with different roles and restrictions. Some kill adult fleas; others affect developing stages or cover additional parasites. A familiar brand name does not make every version suitable for your cat. This guide keeps the original product comparisons while explaining what to check about formulation, duration, safety and the household infestation.

Program

Program is a lufenuron product family intended to interrupt flea development. Oral and injectable formulations have existed, with country-specific availability and instructions. An oral product and a veterinary injection are not interchangeable, and a six-month claim for an injection does not describe every Program pack. Ask the vet which formulation, if any, is appropriate and currently available locally.

Lufenuron interferes with the development of flea eggs and immature stages rather than killing adult fleas already feeding. That difference matters if the cat needs prompt relief from an active infestation. Do not assume it is completely harmless or wait for all adults to die naturally while the animal remains uncomfortable. A veterinarian can choose appropriate adult-flea control where needed and coordinate treatment of the other animals with suitable products for each species.

Advantage

Advantage has several formulations. Advantage II for cats contains imidacloprid and pyriproxyfen, providing contact adult-flea control and effects on immature development. Its US information lists monthly protection for cats at least eight weeks old and two pounds, with the pack selected by weight. Its waterproof claim starts after 24 hours. Check the exact label rather than using an old percentage-kill claim for every product bearing the name.

Killing new adults and reducing viable immature stages helps interrupt the flea life cycle, but the home may still contain protected stages. A topical medicine is not automatically non-toxic because it acts on skin and hair. Follow handling and drying instructions, keep children and other animals from contacting the wet application site, and use only the cat formulation. Ask for advice about ongoing fleas or a reaction instead of adding an early extra dose.

Frontline

Frontline is another product family, so distinguish the cat spot-on, Frontline Plus and any spray sold locally. Frontline Plus contains fipronil and (S)-methoprene: one acts on adults and the other on immature development. For US Frontline Plus, use the cat pack for cats at least eight weeks old and over 1.5 lb, and follow its application and bathing instructions. A spray’s directions cannot be copied onto a pipette or vice versa.

FLEA REMEDIES: Here are 10 effective products that can help you get rid of fleas quickly.

The purpose is to control adults and reduce eggs and larvae developing from their offspring. Other parasite claims vary with the formulation and country, so check the actual tick or lice coverage if you need it. Keep cleaning the cat’s resting sites; a topical application is not a direct treatment of every cocoon already in the carpet.

Revolution as flea treatment for cats

Revolution contains selamectin and is a prescription topical medicine. Its cat label includes flea control and prevention of heartworm, with additional ear-mite and intestinal-parasite indications. Ask the veterinarian about the coverage relevant to your cat. Original US Revolution is monthly for cats at least eight weeks old and does not have a cat tick indication. Revolution Plus adds sarolaner; it is a prescription monthly cat product starting at eight weeks and 2.8 lb, with additional tick coverage. Follow the dose and schedule for the prescribed product.

There is no basis for a blanket statement that veterinarians no longer recommend Revolution. The appropriate choice depends on the cat, parasite risks and the exact product. Bring the cat’s age, weight, health history and current medicines to the discussion, and mention any previous flea-treatment reaction.

Make the treatment work as part of a plan

Check other animals in the home and coordinate their treatment with species-appropriate products. Comb to monitor adult fleas, vacuum important resting sites and wash suitable bedding. Keep a record of applications and sightings. Do not use dog-only permethrin products on a cat, and seek urgent veterinary advice if a cat is exposed or becomes unwell after treatment.
