My husband had major surgery and was in hospital for eight days, I had a couple of acquaintances taking care of my animals, mainly cats, one dog. Before he went into hospital I dusted the house with DE, I knew there was a slight issue, well I ended up staying with him at the hospital the last three days he was there, needless to say what I can home to was horrible, not only did the ones watching the animals and house leave it disgusting, they never informed me that the fleas were getting out of control and it’s been a downhill battle since we’ve been home, it’s so bad it’s killed many of my cats, I’ve sprayed the cats with a monthly spray, a weekly spray, bathed the ones that wouldn’t shred me, dusted with DE, and store bought natural sprays and homemade natural sprays, I’ve put salt down on the carpets and floors, I vacuum daily, have sprayed the house with two different brands of house sprays, they just keep coming back worse, I’m at my wits end here and I am afraid that I’ll lose more of my cats, they are my therapy animals and each one is special to me. If anyone knows what else may work please let me know. I’ll even give you my email address so you can personally send the information to me. Thank you in advance.September 16, 2018 at 10:26 AM #85140
In my whole life I have never responded to any comment on any site. How very much you are dealing with! I have no advice not listed on this site. But could you afford to get you and your husband to a hotel, see if a vet could house and bathe and treat the pets, and call in a professional to treat the home and yard? All of that requires tremendous effort and funds. Prayers will be with you. I am so sorry for your circumstances.September 24, 2018 at 9:58 AM #85306
I agree with the above… and beyond. I think it’s time to move.
That process would go above and beyond the purpose of this comment, and I know it’s easier said than done, but at the end of the day we all must do what needs to be done. Sounds to me like you tried everything else, so for the health of you and your loved ones do whatever it takes to start fresh.
If moving would be a challenge financially I have several ideas that would help, feel free to contact me directly. [e.c.meeks] at gmail.September 28, 2018 at 7:49 AM #85410
If done properly, Diatomaceous Earth or DE can be quite effective.
I get a 50lb bag for about $35 at the local feed store and I cover my yard with it first, cover pet bedding with it. I put a very small amount in their water every day. (I have very small dogs) you can check DE related web sites for info on safe amounts based on weight, etc.
People laugh at me but I’ve had much success with DE. Also I fill a bucket with DE and every other day I actually dip the dogs into the bucket of DE being careful not to get in their eyes, nose and mouth. They can choke on it if they breathe in too much. Just be careful with h your babies. Leave it on them for a few hours and then comb, comb, comb. DE does not kill eggs and larvae so you must be consistent for a couple of weeks to really make a difference but it is a non toxic alternative for flea control.
I agree it is messy but once you get your home, yard and pets free of the little buggers you’ll have peace for several months. Then you can treat again once or twice a month for continued control. It’s worked for me. I have 4 dogs and we live on a ranch with many horses and other animals.
Fleas are one of the few reasons I don’t like Calif. After living in AZ. for quite some time where fleas are rarely an issue. Anyway, good luck. And hey, vinegar does work well too.
