FeliciaHi Jacob
I’m so frustrated, I think my dog has fleas. How long does it take for flea protection to start working. I only saw one flea on my dog and I’m starting to get worried.Hi Felicia
If you only saw one flea and got rid of it, then chances are that you have already avoided a flea infestation. I have found a few fleas on my dog before and after I got rid of them, that was the end of it it.
You forgot to mention which product you used, but flea drops/topical usually kills fleas on your pet within 48 hours.Vacuum your home often and check your dog for fleas with a flea comb once in a while. I also treat my dog with flea drops once a month during flea season and that keeps them away.
AlanaHoovering the house and treating the soft furnishings in the house is great for your strategy. I also find that frontline works really well for my flea treatment for cats or flea treatment for any other pet.
LisaWhat if you don’t see any fleas but have been bitten….will the treatment work on the eggs and larvae in couches and carpet? I vacuumed, laundered etc. how long will it take for results then?
TimIf you have flea bites but don’t see fleas anywhere, you haven’t looked close enough OR you’re getting the flea bites outside your home. Are you in contact with other peoples pets during the day?
When dealing with a serious flea infestation, it can take weeks to months before the last flea/egg has been killed.
Nick RossHey,
I am a regular reader of the health blogs, nowadays I am really concerned about the fast spreading disease ie. Flea Bites. It is quite irritating for everybody especially pets who feel very itchy with these flea bites.
It is really becoming very concerning and should really be prevented rather than curing it.
LeslieI used flea drops on my cat yesterday after noticing her licking herself and scratching a lot. How long does it take to work? I noticed she’s scratching less by now, small clumps of hair fall out when she scratches.
LeslieHartz ultra guard pro is the flea drops I used for my cat. Please let me know how long it takes for Carta to get relief. I noticed she seems a bit relieved but still scratches. I don’t know how long it’s supposed to take since I never had this problem before. Also, is it normal for her to scratch small clumps of fur off? I noticed she did that in the morning. She has never done this so I’m thinking it’s the medicine from the flea drops. I have another cat who seems like she’s not affected. Should I use it on her?
TomI have used drops from hartz on my dogs before. One of them was scratching itself afterwards and the other was not, so they react differently to these products. It should kill the fleas on the pet after a couple of days but it had almost zero effect on my dogs. I changed to frontline, which is a much better product in my opinion.
dude guyDo not use the Hartz flea medication, its very bad for cats and a lot of people have lost their pets to it. Try to get Frontline Plus instead. You can also find PetArmor at Walmart and Walgreen’s and it has the same formula as Frontline Plus.
PjJust a note; After treating your pet, it’s a very good idea to sprinkle baking soda on your carpet and even your upholstered furniture, as these are the areas fleas will also inhabit. Sweep it lightly into your rugs, brush it lightly into your sofa, etc. Leave it there all night and vacuum it in the morning. It is non-toxic to both humans and pets, it will naturally freshen your carpet and furniture, and it will eliminate fleas from those areas. It is also very inexpensive. I’ve used it for years when it became necessary and it’s always proven to be very effective. I worked for a vet for many years and, every once in awhile, carried fleas home with me unknowingly. So much better than chemicals in your home that could harm your little ones.
Naomi DunwellI am a dog groomer so I deal with fleas daily. Flea drops tend to kill fleas and eggs within 48 hours. After your pet has got fleas washing them with a strong flea shampoo (Ridasect is the best) apply the drops. I use frontline ultra which protects from fleas for 2 months and ticks for a month. You won’t find it in stores as it is very strong so you will need to get it from your vet. After you’ve treated the dog you must vacumed your home and clean any wooden flooring, focussing on the edges as fleas like warm places. I also spray my house with a flea killer spray. Hope it helps.
Mollie PoiselSounds like your kitty is allergic to fleas. My kitty is also. One flea and Bess my kitty gets horrible itchy spots and her hair gets patchy. Get rid of fleas and my kitty is fine. Make sure you buy flea drops made for kitties. Also make sure you use the correct amount for her weight. Usually it has it on the box. Also I switched from Purina. It makes my kitty puke. Also anytime you use any flea product do not combine with other flea products. You’ll O.D. your cat on flea pesticides. Including flea collar, spray, shampoo, drops, powder, home and garden flea spray.
elizabethI don’t have pets but somehow had fleas in my house. I treated the house and was wondering how long does it take before the spray starts to kill the fleas.
Lynda MueggenborgI applied the flea killing product (Sentry Purrscriptions) to the side of my cat’s neck rather than the top. Will this matter in treating the fleas? She was squirmy at the time and that’s where I ended up getting her. Also, how soon can you treat again?
wayne blaubachMy car has fleas inside. I have many bites. How do I get rid of them?
GarethBest thing I’ve ever done is Bob Martin flea drops, not too expensive but work and flea bombs of eBay, locked my cats in the kitchen, sealed it up tight with tape etc so the gas would get in there, set the bombs off, left the house for 2 hours then hoovered.
MeganMy dog is a puppy and he has fleas. I used pet action plus, I just wanted to know if it actually works.
Thanks.
DianeI found 4 fleas on my dog and I’ve put frontline on her. How long will it take to work and if I already have fleas in my home, how can I get rid of them and what’s the best and quickest way?
LacieHey guys, want to get rid of fleas, flea eggs, larvae, and ticks for good for 30 days until next treatment? Then I have astounding news! OK what you’ll need is: dawn dish soap, baking soda, strong vacuum, flea comb, vegetable oil and pet armor plus or Frontline plus (I prefer pet armor plus because it works and it’s cheaper).
1. Make a bath for the dog, pour about 1 cup of vegetable oil in it and let the rise of the water get past your dog’s belly. (If you have a BIG dog you’ll need a bigger bath). Now put your dog in and make sure it is soaked. Then you take the dawn dish soap and SCRUB SCRUB SCRUB. What this does is it melts away the exoskeleton of the fleas and kills them instantly, the vegetable oil is to ensure they don’t latch back on your pet. (You can also make flea traps with dawn dish soap). Now your dog may not like it, but you have to completely submerge it under water with its head sticking out for 10 minutes. Believe me I know it’s long but this ensures all fleas drown and die. Then rinse until all the bubbles are out of the fur.
2. Drain water where only paws are submerged in water, use a flea comb ALL over your dog. Make sure no surviving fleas and eggs are left.
3. Now dry the dog, wait until it is dry and put the pet armor or Frontline plus on. And put it in a kennel or wherever it sleeps. Give it 24 to 48 hours for all fleas, flea eggs and larvae to be killed.
4. Sprinkle baking soda all over your carpet that night and let it stay over night and in the morning vacuum. Your vacuum is your BEST FRIEND at this point. Vacuum everyday until you see no more fleas. #1 killer of fleas, yup you guessed it, the vacuum.
I promise all of this will work 100%. I do it on my dog once a month to ensure cleanliness, and avoid fleas as much as I can. I can’t stand bugs! And my husband loves for our dog to sleep with us, so in the end, we get what we both want. 🙂
Julie cummingsI used spot on flea treatment yesterday could you please tell me if it works straight away.
brandyNever use Hartz it’s very bad for animals and a bunch of animals have died from it. Always use vet recommended products – revolution is the best.
Brenda MDo not use hartz products…after using the hartz drops, one of our cats died!!! There’s no way anyone could convince me it wasn’t the drops. All 4 of our cats were in fine health before we used them and she took an immediate turn for the worse. Within hours, she started having seizures and within 30 minutes of the start of the seizures, she died in my son’s arms! We are devastated.. If I could go back and treat again I’d use nothing but frontline plus. I wish Hartz would voluntarily pull their products from the shelves! God is watching them destroy His creatures!
AngelaOur doberman has fleas, but we didn’t know until our house had a total infestation. That was in October. We STILL have fleas! We had exterminators bomb our house twice and it didn’t kill the fleas. I’ve been using Pet Armor on the dog (3 applications now) and put him in the (furnished) lower level so that the fleas wouldn’t bite our toddler. I used Diatomaceous Earth upstairs in our living quarters along with vacuuming and changing my clothes before I go downstairs (picking them off me before I come back upstairs) and that has kept them out of our main areas. But our lower level is totally off limits and the fleas are just thriving. I have mopped with bleach, spread DE all over the basement, set light and dish soap traps and they still won’t die! Could they be living in the couches? Should we throw out our furniture? Help!
Wendy YarberryAmen! Do not use hartz products on any of your animals for anything. Hartz topical flea “medicine” killed my cat and she died a painful miserable tortured death.
Use only Frontline or Frontline Plus.. Pet Armor or Pet Armor Plus. -
