It has been two weeks since we started battling these fleas and I’m pretty sure we did everything wrong. We treated the dog with a topical treatment, then a week later treated the cat when we realized he also had fleas. We should have treated them both at once but it’s too late now.
After treating both pets, I freak-cleaned the living room, dining room and younger kids bedroom, the three spots that the pets hang out in the most. Vacuumed under everything, sprayed it down with an organic peppermint spray. I’ve been spraying the pets favorite spots every day (the couch, the cat tree, chair in the kids room, rug by the deck door). We dusted all the open carpeted areas on the upper floor with D. Earth, brushed it in, let it sit for an hour, then vacuumed. Gave the dog a long soak in the bath as well. Threw in a bunch of loads of laundry and washed the beddings over the course of three days.
The real problem is in the basement. The pets don’t spend much time there, but it’s full of boxes of old junk that my parents never seem to have to time to go through. I’m worried that there are fleas living in the carpet under the boxes.
It’s been two days since I did the freak-cleans and the dusting, and the dog is itching even worse now, although the cat seems to be doing a little bit better (but is still itching).
It seems like I am the only one in my family that cares about getting rid of these fleas. I want to just throw out all the boxes in the basement but my parents say that they want to look through them first, which they’ve been saying for five years now. I am at my wits end and I’m about ready to move out to get away from this situation. What do I do? Is there any way to treat the basement without spending weeks going through of the all the junk? I’m working a job and going to college and I don’t have much free time. I don’t know where to turn to. I need help and advice.
