As of right now the fleas are not bad in the house, we caught them on our 3 cats pretty quickly! Reason for checking them on a daily basis was because my husband was working at a farm. Which has at least 50 outside cats, 25+ cows, & a few dogs, so I knew we had a chance of him bringing them home.
I went to our nearest pet store & picked up several items: 1-Advantage Shampoo Treatment 2-Frontline Plus Drops (They were out of the Advantage Brand) 3-Advantage Carpet & Upholstery Spot Spray & 4-Advantage Household Spot & Crevice Spray.
My Husband & I are reading the labels thoroughly, writing down the steps 1 by 1 but as we’re reading I’m not so sure this is a safe way of doing things. The warning signs are pretty intense! We have 4 children in the home who are 10 & younger, 3 cats who are 5 & younger, & my husband is on bed rest at the moment. It’s one thing keeping the cats away from the household products, keeping our kids & husband out of harm’s way is another.
So ALL morning I have been online researching every possible product & remedy that I can find. Some sound doable & safer, others scare me just the same. Therefore it has me wondering, is it safer & effective to use the home remedies that I have come across? Sprinkling Borax on the carpets, mattresses, & couches is not the route that I would use. I’m leaning towards a mixture of baking soda & salt, plus a liquid mixture of lemon juice, vinegar, tea tree oil, & water. Baking soda & salt would be used on the carpets, while the liquid mixture would be used for the mattresses, couches & floors that do not have carpet.
Another thing we are wondering is, is it safe to shampoo the cats with the treatment & then put the drops on them? I haven’t come across anything that can tell me whether or not it is safe. My guess is I can shampoo them with the treatment & then wait at least 72 hrs before using the drops on them. I’ve also came across using Dawn Dish Soap & Vinegar in their baths, waiting for them to dry while I use the flea comb & then put the drops on?
Thankfully I came across your site & was able to find a lot of useful information! Not to mention a Forum where I can ask people for their opinions & help. Right now I am feeling super overwhelmed! Obviously the kids cannot help, neither can my husband, so this is all on me along with everything else. Either way it has to be done before it gets out of control, please help me get rid of them as quickly & as safely as possible.
